Sandvik Coromant is the best all-round choice for CNC tooling — if your shop runs standard materials and has consistent volume.
I’ve been managing tool procurement for about five years now, processing 60–80 orders annually across a dozen vendors. When I started in 2020, I thought the cheapest insert was the smartest buy. Four bad batches and one emergency reorder later, I learned that total cost of ownership matters more than unit price. And on that metric, Sandvik Coromant consistently comes out ahead — but not for every job.
What Makes Sandvik Coromant Different

- Rush orders for oddball sizes — sometimes we need a non-standard chipbreaker for a weird part. The lead time from Sandvik’s distribution is solid (3–5 days), but a local regrinder can turn it around in 24 hours. Trade-off: higher price, but the timeline wins.
- Budget-conscious projects where cost is king — if it’s a low-volume job with no quality risk, I’ll sometimes use a secondary vendor. I’ve learned the hard way (a $2,400 expense rejection over a handwritten invoice from that new supplier) that cheap isn’t always cheap — but sometimes it is.
The key is knowing which bucket your job falls into. Sandvik’s literature doesn’t tell you when not to use them. My rule of thumb: if you’re doing production runs of common materials (steel, stainless, cast iron) with established speeds, go Sandvik every time. If it’s a one-off, a prototype, or an extreme material, ask around.
Other Tools I Manage (Yes, Including 3D Printing)
Our shop also runs a couple of FDM printers for jigs and fixtures. If you’re new to that side, what file type does 3D printers use? Standard is .STL, but we’ve started switching to .3MF for better color and material info. And if you’re in metal fabrication, you’ve probably dealt with laser welding fume extractor regulations — we had to upgrade our system after an OSHA visit last year.
